For Pluto

(though we've never actually met)

you are not
what we have named you
too small, though for a time
you were numbered
among the very large
9 of 9
who am i to diminish you?
larger than me
circling beyond my scope

you were styrofoam
you were paper mache

(excommunicated
though the heretics
will forever count you)

you are still what you were
orbital, celestial
you are my planetary heart
confusing and distant, exactly
what you were before
they called you names.

The final voting came from about 400 to 500 of the 2,400 astronomers who were registered at the meeting of the International Astronomical in Prague. Many of the astronomers, Dr. Pasachoff explained, had already left, thinking there would be nothing but dry resolutions to decide in the union’s final assembly.

This was a sham vote taken when the majority of astronomers had gone home and I refuse to recognize it.

PLace PLuto as a PLanet PLease

by the way, love the poem

Pluto is oblivious to any of this. We called Pluto a planet and now we have decided to call it something less. Pluto is still doing it's thing. No one is to blame. In a certain way Pluto is further distinguished, and that isn't bad. Call it a planet, call it a dwarf, it will be what it is.

i am intrigued by the idea of a sham vote...

My concern is more for Clyde and his legacy. I'd like to see any of these yayhoos find a "dwarf planet" with the technology that Clyde was using.

This is an interview with Clyde's wife. She has a nice perspective.

I think the Planet Nazi's have a vested interest in the science textbook industry and they wanted a reason to sell more books.

Follow the money...

Count me a heretic. Great poem.

By the way Linda, I have started reading your blog. Just thought you should know so it is not like I am spying or anything.

thanks nattyman... thanks for reading too. planets used to be about the science, now it's about how much coca-cola the corporate scientists can sell.
