"Be kind to her in your cave"

My mythology knowledge is pretty soft. Any thoughts on what "Athinian cave" is located in a wooded area (seems tranquil) and inside is a monster/horror of some type, tongueless? This line may or may not have some significance: "Little snake, little snake, what a pretty pair/ We make". I was reading a Kenneth Patchen poem and it refers to this cave throughout. Anyway there are bad, bad things in the cave, but I feel like I'm just guessing about which cave it is.

Is Aninian the same as Athenian, anyway here is an interesting Greek mythology tidbit... The Greek Daemons [daemonae] were the invisible divine beings which were assigned by Zeus to every god and every important human being as sort of a guardian angel creature to give good advice and lead them properly. The Daemons
( from which, of course we get our word demon) could appear as a handsome young youth or as a wise serpent.

This could be your Athenian cave...
Davelis' Cave, just outside Athens, is one of the most notorious locations in the entire country, shunned and feared by many. It seems to have the power, even today, to generate strange stories of paranormal phenomena.

Prof Donnelly used to talk about the daemons. i miss his classes. I'm not sure that we have the right cave because the poem has mythic quality(sorry you're not privy to the poem. i would offer a link if i could).
